It's easy to get overwhelmed by the daily stresses in our lives, and we tend to focus on all the negative hum-drum of it all. But did you know you can trick your brain into feeling happier?

How? Well, let’s dig a little deeper...

So you’ve been going to the gym and doing your bicep curls to get those nice toned arms? Good. Now do the same with your brain! I don’t mean put a dumbbell on your head and dance around with it - no, please don’t.

Remember your brain is a muscle and just like you would do bicep curls to strengthen your arms, you need to exercise your brain. Let’s whip your brain into shape with some mind exercises!

1. Find three things to be thankful for everyday

You can either recite these to yourself, write them down, or whatever you feel comfortable with.
They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, so keep track! You’ll find as you get into the habit of finding things to be thankful for, you’ll find more and more, and more easily!

2. Mindfulness

Being mindful while working your way through everyday life is very important!
Mindfulness is not just about meditating, it can come down to just taking 10 seconds to 5 minutes out of your day to focus on yourself. Be in the present.
Spending too much time planning, over-thinking or paying attention to “negative” thoughts can be draining.

A good way to practise mindfulness is to take deep breaths, focusing only on your breathing. Slowly start paying attention to any sounds or sensations you might hear or feel. After a few deep breaths, start bringing your attention back to your breathing and relax.

3. Turn off the TV

Spending time with your favourite series can be a great way to relax, but next time, choose a book you haven’t read before - or reread a classic favourite!
Reading might seem like an obvious “exercise”, but it stimulates the brain and the imagination! Try challenging yourself to a new book every month.

4. Use your imagination

Your imagination is a very powerful tool. Imagine the day you want, the life you want! Your imagination can serve as a great motivating tool, and it can be the key to your perfect day and even life!

5. Smile!

Did you know you’re brain doesn’t know the difference between real laughter and fake laughter? It’s the same when you smile... Even if you fake a smile, you trick your brain into releasing those happy hormones. Even more reason to smile is the fact that it takes more muscles in your face to frown than it does to smile. So the next time you feel like you need a pick-me-up, just smile for a few minutes. Let’s strive for laugh-lines, not frown-lines.

Remember your happiness is within you, no-one can take it away without your permission. Yes, life and work in general can be stressful, but let’s make time to look after our minds and bodies. Be kind to yourself!
Self-care is very important, and giving our minds a break is a part of that.
