Productivity Can Be Overwhelming - [website] Email Print

We all know how important it is to be productive, to do our job effectively and successfully. We all want to tick off that to-do list and breathe a sigh of relief at the end of the day, patting ourselves on the back as we watch the sun set...

Unfortunately, that isn't always the case. I'm sure we've all been there- the list of things that need to be done feels never-ending... Or maybe something takes longer than we expected, or maybe your boss, manager and co-workers keep adding to the pile that you are already struggling to make smaller...

The pressure we feel to be productive can be overwhelming.

I don't know about you, but I sometimes have this idea in my head of what it looks like to be productive and if, at the end of the day, my list of 'accomplishments' doesn't look like that idea or expectation I created... Well, then I feel like I failed, like I didn't do my job and it leads to a whole lot of stress. Funny thing is, if I actually think about what I did do, what I did 'accomplish' and put it into perspective- it adds up to more than what I gave myself credit for.

Think about it for a moment, how often do you criticize yourself or feel like you failed just because the end result doesn't look like the preconceived picture in your head?

I read a quote recently, by Robert Louis Stevenson:
"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant"

Wow, what an important reminder! Just because we might feel like we didn't achieve much, does not mean we didn't achieve much. You with me? We don't see the seeds, what we do see is the harvest... But that doesn't mean the seeds don't hold value.

What you do today, forms part of tomorrow's "harvest". It adds to your end goal.

So the next time you start to feel like you had an unproductive day, ask yourself if perhaps today was spent planting the seeds for the harvest you will reap tomorrow, next week or next month?
