A question we often get asked is "How do I motivate my staff?"
To understand the art of motivation we need to first understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Extrinsic motivation... what is it?
Extrinsic motivation stems from the idea that you provide people with rewards for a certain outcome reached
For example, if you reach your target, you will earn x% production bonus.
Extrinsic motivation can and does work but there is a fine line between motivation and expectation
... and when that bonus becomes the norm, it no longer has the incentive power we need it to have!
Studies have also shown
us that extrinsic motivation doesn't really work for the higher paid more thought orientated jobs! Interestingly the rise of open source in the IT world is the perfect example of this. How else do you explain a bunch of individuals with advanced skills getting together and freely donating their time and effort for the better of the world in general? Google Linus Torvalds and Linux.
What does work in this instance then?
Well the answer is intrinsic motivation
Once the basics of the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs are in place it is likely that individuals will transcend the need for extrinsic motivation (having said that not paying people enough to begin with can be a de-motivator - see the Herzberg Launch Pad theory) and will start looking inward for their motivation
In other words, if you are able to tap into the inner needs of your team
, their purpose as such and grant them the opportunity at mastering their chosen art as well as the autonomy to do so, you are headed for the win. Obviously the more competent your team, the more likely it is that this can happen.
It's simple really. Human beings do best at things they love doing
and they willingly give it away for free if they are able to do so.
From a management and leadership perspective
it then makes perfect sense that we need to reward our people in the right way for the right thing.
Certainly continue to reward for outcome, but recognize that when you reward for input, for effort as such, you are encouraging your team to love what they do and in that instance they will likely produce more of it.
