How strategic is your policy towards up-skilling your staff? - [website] Email Print

As a soft skills training provider, it’s really satisfying working closely with companies on designing and implementing up-skilling programmes for their employees. We are available to build strategies which help translate their vision into reality through ongoing investment in their gold value medal – their staff.

We then get to work with these individuals on various workshops and, with their agreement, provide feedback reports. We are party to the entire process. Given the long term nature of our relationships, we are able to observe the positive fruit which is an inevitable outworking of believing in one’s employees. It’s tangible and can be clearly measured. It gives us enormous pleasure to be able to watch the upward trajectories of those in whom the company has invested.

There is one company which comes to mind immediately; they are totally committed to uplifting their staff in a very real way, and have an uncanny ability of identifying potential in an employee. We have worked closely with them for over 10 years now and are continually amazed at how clever they are at intuiting which employees would most benefit.

Add to this the fact that their vision is long term – they understand that soft skills are just that – skills. The individual involved needs to be encouraged to practise – after all, how else does one become competent in any skill? This client is well aware that up-skilling is a process, not a once off event. And they put their money where their mouth is – ensuring their staff are supported where necessary with coaching or mentoring.

Understand, many of the people whom they identify for advancement initially joined the organisation as cleaners, security guards, general workers and so on. We see them move into supervisory, junior management and senior management posts. And for us, it is doubly rewarding when we have the opportunity of hosting these delegates on ongoing courses; actually seeing how they’ve bloomed.

Even more exciting is the fact that we now work with these individuals on formulating programmes to up-skill those who work under them. Their approach to succession planning speaks to the fact that they are highly engaged in their jobs and want the same for those for whom they are responsible.

Essentially, a generosity of spirit permeates their workplace. They have an intrinsic understanding that, to sustain growth, they must equip their staff to effectively manage both themselves and the latest crop of rising stars. They subscribe fully to the axiom that if you take care of your employees they will take care of your customers. Treating your employees badly will always reflect in the way they treat your customers.

We have had the privilege of watching this company flourish, even in the bad times. It’s more than obvious that, whilst they expect a high level of efficiency and engagement from all their staff, they consider up-skilling a necessity, not just a nice-to-have!
