Every now and again, a piece of information so simple and so logical crosses your path that it changes the way you make decisions from that point forward.
For me, that moment came through Bo Burlingham’s book, "Finish Big".
Just for context, my name is Debbie Engelbrecht and I’m the Managing Director of Staff Training, a leadership development and communication skills training company established in 1998.
Our beginnings were humble. Our learning curve was steep (and it still is). But our passion has always been unshakable.
Over the years, Staff Training grew from a Cape Town-based business into a national training provider. Along the way, we entered the arena of accredited training and learned something that many South African businesses understand deeply:
theory and practice are two very different things.
What works on paper does not always work in real workplaces.
That’s one of the reasons I believe what we offer is so valuable. We don’t do “once-off training and hope for the best.” We learn and adjust with every learner that crosses our path. We listen closely to the unique challenges our clients face. And through intention, consistency, and hard work, we’ve built a niche that we’re proud of.
One thing I’ve come to recognise over the years is that business owners often share a similar long-term goal, even if they don’t always say it out loud.
They want to be able to step away.
Maybe for a week. Maybe for a month. Maybe for full retirement one day.
And when they do, they want to know the business
will still run smoothly. No crisis. No panic. No constant calls and messages. Just a team with the confidence, authority, and ability to keep things moving forward.
But that kind of stability doesn’t happen naturally.
It happens by design.
And the truth is, you can’t design that endgame at the last minute. You have to start early.
You have to invest in it. And you have to do it timeously.
