Fake it Till You Make it!

The key to being happy at work
The key to being happy at work
I’ve been thinking. How many of us can say we actually love our jobs?

Not all the time, not every aspect, but in a way that edifies us and causes us to strive continually to be better, to have more fun at work, to actually take more out of the job than it takes out of us?

Well, I’m fortunate enough to say that I am one of these people. I get a huge amount of satisfaction from the work I do. I learn daily, on every single course I facilitate, even if it’s one I’ve run numerous times - I learn from my delegates. I learn about myself and how to develop and adapt to new course material, how to make it accessible to the people on my workshops and how to create an environment where all of us benefit from the experience.

Now I want to ask you – do I feel like this because I’m one of the lucky ones who landed with my proverbial in the butter? Am I that one person who gets to do that which they are passionate about? Or, does my own attitude contribute to my high level of satisfaction?

I can tell you that I still get Sunday afternoon blues, open my eyes reluctantly on Monday morning when the alarm goes and drag myself through my preparations for the day.

However, once I’m on my way to work, once I reach our training venue, once I have shepherded the delegates into the relevant training area, I am in a completely different state of mind.

Has anything changed? Nope. I still had to leave my snug bed, go through the routines of a lifetime whilst bemoaning the fact that it’s Monday. I’m not special. I don’t have a recessive gene which makes me love the mundane duties I have to carry out, but I do feel passionate about what I do and with that comes the impetus to face the nitty-gritty which I’d much rather avoid.

In fact, I have made a conscious choice to identify and grow the ‘fun’ element, even when I’m not really feeling it.

So my challenge to you is – find the fun in your job. Identify it, feed it, watch it grow and your passion will surely follow. And if all else fails – fake it till you make it!
