Why Projects Fail and What You Can Do About it
Look around you. Most people are good and kind and have solid values. Most people are at work and prepared to get the job done. I believe that. We are a great nation.

But then why is government service delivery such a problem? Why is it that projects fail and outcomes are not achieved? I believe the missing link can be found in project and team management.

I recently observed a group of professionals put together a first time project. It went well, but there were some mistakes.

So allow me to explain. This was a recreational project with an attendance of about 160 people.

But let's assume you work in government. Your project will likely affect a few thousand people. Some things will be measured and are bound to come up short.

After all, you cannot please all of the people all of the time. The challenge we have is to aim for perfection in an organised, well-orchestrated and superbly communicated manner.

Now look around you again. Do you think any of your colleagues woke up this morning with the intention of failing at their job? I don't. I think they may make errors because the framework for success has not been fully communicated. It is for this reason that I propose that every individual in every department everywhere attend a Basic Introduction to Project Management course. And those in government can attend a Service Delivery Excellence course. And students doing projects at tertiary level can join them. It's all about structure, frameworks and superb communication.

What goes away is...

What goes away is the temptation to take shortcuts. Confusion as to the role you play. Misunderstanding about the desired outcome. The eternal conflict and whodunnit time wastage. And the ability of any team member to shirk responsibility or misuse finance. We are talking about a transparent framework with measurements, checks and balances and clear team goals.

Sound better than what you are experiencing now? Ask your office manager to investigate more or contact us yourself and be the hero when your next company project becomes smoother and more profitable. Who knows, it may even translate into a bonus for you!
