Celebrating their 10th birthday, Staff Training are putting together a series of articles on what South African employees are experiencing on a day-to-day basis, in an effort for us to find some REAL solutions for REAL people!
My first question to our trainers was:
Please rate the five most common complaints you hear from our delegates about their management's behaviour.
This was the response…
1. There is no consistency or fairness….
2. There is absolutely no communication
3. A bit of recognition would be nice!
4. They take your ideas and sell them off as their own
5. Management just don't understand what we deal with
On probing as to why delegates do not directly approach management asking for feedback and recognition, an overwhelming majority said that they would feel uncomfortable doing so.
When we probed around the issues of management knowledge, we found that whilst it was highly appreciated by the delegates, the manner in which the knowledge was imparted carried a much higher weighting.
We know from Conflict Management that perceived personal threats will invariably call for response from an individual; and that personal threats will arise when one's gender, race, religion, finances, esteem, ego etc. are challenged.
The only conclusion we can then really draw from this is that a highly developed level of Emotional Intelligence is essential for any harmonious relationship but that the demand on managers seems higher.
