We work in a dynamic industry where new ideas are constantly being propounded. This phenomenon can be the life blood of soft skills training. However, unless we’re discerning, we can end up with workshops full of ‘new’ and exciting theories and tools which over-promise and under-deliver.

It should be noted that many of the most widely punted theoretical tools have been around for decades. They’ve stood the test of time because they are easy to grasp and actually add value in the work situation.

From its conception, Staff Training has focused on offering courses which are both relevant and applicable.

It’s of no use to our delegates if we centre our content on ideas that look really good, but aren’t simple, logical, and easy to implement.

We spend a good deal of time researching trends and subjecting new ideas to rigorous testing; eventually, including only those which realistically add value. Our workshops must introduce our delegates to concepts that will benefit them both in the workplace and in life in general.

As a facilitator, I’d find it impossible to train on something which I personally haven’t found beneficial. I’d feel like a fraud and it’d show! It’s really important to me that the delegates with whom I work with are able to see practical applications for the content covered in the workshop.

This was brought home to me during a Change Management Course. We were working with a theory which was part of the bedrock of change management. I sensed that one of the delegates wasn’t really on board with the whole concept and decided to run another scenario through the steps which comprised the tool. Once we’d completed this third practical, she sat back, sighed loudly and stated that it was the first time she’d actually understood the theory and its application. She’d studied it at varsity, got excellent marks, but had no idea how to actually use it!

Without a doubt, we’ve failed as a training provider if the tools with which we equip our delegates end up on the scrap heap because they’re simply not practical. Real skills for real people!
