1. Learn to listen to what your staff are really saying. Listening to your staff and considering what they have to say builds trust and encourages them to talk to you in the future. You'll also be privy to information about them and your customers that you wouldn't have otherwise known.
2. Keep your staff informed. This means letting them know, in good time, exactly what you expect from them, when you expect it, and what standard you're expecting them to deliver.
3. Deal with important matters, such as discipline etc., in person and in private as much as possible. Try to leave the emails for the less important stuff.
4. Communicate clearly by ensuring your tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions etc. all convey the same message.
5. Don't be afraid to ask for assistance. At times you're going to need help, being able to ask for help when it's needed is the mark of a great manager.
