The Year-End Wind Down: What Really Matters? - [website] Email Print
Published: 6th of Dec 2024 by: Shona Beukes

When December finally arrived, there was a collective sigh of relief in the air- and a touch of panic too. The year is wrapping up, deadlines are closing in, and the to-do lists seem never-ending. It's a strange time, isn’t it? A mix of exhaustion, celebration, and the hope for a fresh start.

But in the rush to "finish strong" it's easy to overlook something crucial: your well-being.

This time of year isn’t just about tying up loose ends at work or organising the perfect holiday plans. It’s also about taking stock of where you are, what you’ve achieved, and, most importantly, what you need to recharge and refocus.

What if we did things differently this year?

Instead of rushing to the finish line, let's take a moment to pause and rethink how we approach the end of the year. What if this was the season to slow down and focus on what truly matters?

Here are two ideas to consider:

1. Set a Mini ‘Un-Bucket List’
Instead of making a list of things to achieve before year-end, write down things you don’t need to worry about anymore. It could be small tasks that no longer matter or letting go of expectations you’ve been carrying all year.

2. Create a “Joy Journal”
Dedicate the last few weeks of the year to jotting down moments of joy or gratitude each day. It’s a simple practice that can help you end the year with a sense of fulfilment, even amidst the chaos.

As tempting as it is to cram more into the final weeks, remember this: the world won’t end if you don’t tick every box. What will matter is the connections you nurture, the memories you create, and the time you give yourself to just be.

This year, let’s wind down with purpose. Reflect on the year gone by, but don’t forget to celebrate your progress. And as we step into a new year, let’s do so rested, refreshed, and ready- because you’re worth it.
