Pushing the Limits

Pushing the Limits
Imagine getting into a one-man hot air balloon, ascending for over two hours to the point where our atmosphere meets space, and then jumping out and hurtling towards the ground faster than the speed of sound.

This just happens to be exactly what Austrian skydiver and BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner did on Sunday 14 October when he became the first man to break the speed of sound with just his body as he skydived from 128,000 feet above the earth, successfully completing the Redbull Stratos Jump.

Can you imagine that? I honestly think I'd faint….

Baumgartner smashed several records during his attempt, including, highest manned balloon flight, highest altitude skydive and also became the first skydiver to travel at speeds greater than Mach 1 (faster than 1110km/h - used to measure the speed of sound).

It just goes to show that while we may think we know our limits, there's always someone out there willing to raise the bar and go beyond what we've thought possible.

So thank you Felix Baumgartner, although I can barely think of what you've achieved without feeling uncomfortably dizzy, I am inspired and in awe of your accomplishment.

Watch Felix Baumgartner skydive from the stratosphere:
