Are you tired of the same old routine, day in and day out? Then it's time to take a step back... Assess what you want from your day and make a concerted effort to make it happen.

Reclaiming the joy in your job is not as mammoth a task as you would think; all you've got to do is get your head around what you really want from your day.

It could be that you want to be more productive, reduce your stress or make better use of the time you spend commuting - whatever it is, though, it's very important that you get into and stay in a positive mood at work - if you aren't, the work you produce will reflect it.

One of the most effective things to do is plan. Plan plan plan. Planning helps you organise your day, stops you running out of time for important tasks and makes you feel more in control of the job you're doing. You need to remember though that your to-do list is never going to be finished (a Herculean task for our perfections to accept) as you continuously add to it and change it.

Take breaks when you need to. When you start feeling frustrated and snowed under, take a few minutes to collect yourself, think about what needs to be done and how you're going to do it, then set to the task with a fresh and energised mind.

Focus on the positive things at work. In the words of Life Learning Today: "Being productive and competitive in business doesn't mean that you have to be serious all the time. Smiling doesn't mean you're not working hard. Enthusiasm doesn't mean you're not competitive. Being positive doesn't mean you're blind to challenges." Choose to enjoy your time at work and not only will you be happier but you'll perform better too.

If one of the reasons you dislike going to work is the act of getting there itself (sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, waiting for the train etc.) then find out how you can use this time more effectively. Make it your special time to brainstorm projects or do something you enjoy like reading (only if you take the train, though). If you can start looking forward to this time instead of dreading it you'll get to work in a much better mood and feel as though you've already accomplished something.

The bottom line is that you've got to find ways to make yourself happy, and if your job is taking away from that it needs changing. Get more organised, more focused and stay on course, the rest will surely fall into place.
