We surveyed the managers who attended our training in 2018 and asked them what they want from their teams.
Their top 4 answers were as follows:
1. To be available and engaged
2. To communicate their needs
3. To bring potential solutions as well as the problems
4. To take responsibility for their tasks from beginning to end
The Staff Training guide for managers on how to achieve the desired outcome is simple:
1. Identify the actual behaviours, systems and processes required to address these needs
2. Upskill the teams on how to access these behaviours, systems and processes
3. Continue to coach and mentor as well as set the example
4. Hold teams accountable
How we can help:
Being available and engaged:
Translated to team behaviour this is read as being punctual and present, focussing on the task at hand, bringing new ideas and solutions to the table.
What managers can do:
Recognise and assist where possible with the challenges teams face with personal transport stresses. Challenges at home and/or anything that can possibly divert attention from the workplace.
Recognise that different personalities focus in a different ways and assist them with the tools and environment that helps them to focus fully.
Have weekly brainstorming meetings, encourage a culture of collaboration, for new ideas to surface it has to be accepted that some may fail to some degree or other. Allowing room and a safety-net for that failure is essential.
The workshops Staff Training offer to assist with this learning are amongst others: How to Engage your Team, Coaching and Mentoring, Self Mastery and Emotional Intelligence
Translated to team behaviour this is read as using the correct processes in the correct way. Speaking to the right people at the right time in the right way.
What managers can do: Ensure that the processes are in place, SIMPLE and logical, ensure that everyone knows how to use them.
The workshops Staff Training offer specifically with communication in mind includes Communication Excellence, Delegating for Success, Customer Care (internal and external) and How to Manage Effective Meetings
To bring potential solutions as well as the problems:
Translating this to behaviour it means that there has to be critical analysis, sometimes collaboration and often a transfer of authority to ensure that solutions are solid. In addition a sense of accountability from the team.
The workshops Staff Training offer that cover these topics are: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Assertiveness, 3 Day Leadership and the Developing your Management Potential series .
To take responsibility for their tasks from beginning to end:
Translating this to behaviour it would mean taking your own role in the company seriously and understanding the impact you have on the success of the outcome, it may mean that authority levels and organograms are understood, that there is a sense of goal orientation and an alignment to company values and expectations.
Once again Staff Training can assist with: Effective Service Delivery, Project Management, Team Refocus and Strategising and Self Mastery.
What we found interesting is that in our opinion the concept of employee engagement is covered in
in all 4 of the management wish list.
An interesting article from Custom Insight: (https://www.custominsight.com/employee-engagement-survey/what-is-employee-engagement.asp) offers more valuable information and insight on how to strengthen and empower the organisations most valuable assets.
