It is well-known that emotional intelligence is a far better predictor of success than IQ, with people with well-developed emotional intelligence being up to four times as successful as their equal IQ counterparts.


Emotional Intelligence speaks to the way in which we handle our own emotions, as well as how we respond to the emotions of others.

How often have you walked away from a particularly heated conversation, and once calm, realised that if you’d taken a second to think about how you would like to respond you might have handled the situation very differently?

Emotional Intelligence is all about knowing yourself, understanding your emotions, and assessing and appropriately responding to the emotions of others. Fortunately emotional intelligence is a skill that can be learnt and developed, leading to overall better communication, more solid and open relationships, and for leaders, a more trust-driven leadership style that results in a higher level of engagement from team members.

Three quick tips for developing your Emotional Intelligence:

1. Be mindful of your emotions

Take note of your emotions before they become extreme, i.e. be aware of your mild irritation or frustration before it becomes full-blown anger or rage. Understanding what sets you off and responding appropriately - whether this be to practice a breathing exercise, or to walk away from the conversation and revisit it when you are calm - can help ensure more peaceful and fruitful interactions.

2. Listen to feedback and criticism with an open mind

It’s easy to take negative feedback to heart, but the truth is being able to accept criticism and negative feedback is a huge part of how we grow and develop.

3. Practice relaxation techniques

Learning to meditate and practicing breathing exercises is a great way of ensuring that you are able to calm yourself down and reflect mindfully on everything that is going on in your life, which leads to more rational and well-thought-out responses to that which tends to stress you.
