Everywhere I turn, I seem to be encountering people who are sinking under the weight of the demands of life, most particularly at work.
It’s a dreadfully enervating state in which to be going through life. All of our worst ‘coping mechanisms’ come to the fore when tasks are simply too much. Unfortunately, these self-destructive actions simply add to the load.
I’d like to highlight a few of the most common self-defeating behaviours we find ourselves perpetuating.
1. Procrastination – the task is just too big. We don’t know where to start, are unable to envision its successful completion. We’ve never learnt to eat the elephant one bite at a time. The powerful skill of pacing ourselves. It’s all or nothing. I’ll do it tomorrow.
2. Perfection Paralysis – we can’t accept anything but perfection from ourselves. These unreasonable expectations spell disaster before we even start. If we do start, that is!
3. Self-pity – weird one, I know. But you see, those of us who don’t have great boundaries spend a lot of time in our heads bemoaning the way our colleagues take us for granted. But we don’t let any one of the culprits know they’ve overstepped our imaginary boundary. No, we just use up all our emotional and intellectual head space meditating on our terrible lot in life.
4. Disorganisation – many people live in a critical state of chaos. They believe they have a handle on everything, where every scrap of paper is piled. What they’re not realising is that an enormous amount of brain power is being used up to remember everything, as opposed to taking the time to set up a workable system.
5. Not delegating – we don’t believe anyone can do the job as fast or as well as we can. Then we seethe with resentment when our colleagues leave at home time and we’re left sitting there until midnight.
6. Trying to do everything simultaneously - it’s called multi-tasking and it doesn’t work. If we’re focussing on five things at once, we’re going to drop a ball – sometimes all five!
7. Talking about how much we have to do instead of actually doing it. This is a wonderful form of distraction, but potentially lethal!
8. Making plans in our heads instead of on paper. It’s not possible to gain perspective if it stays in our heads – we need to structure our planning, on paper, so our subconscious can come into its own and move us into a problem solving mode.
9. We’re just plain scared. We don’t feel up to the task, so we hide our heads in the sand and hope it quietly disappears. Get help – get training – don’t ignore what needs to be done!
