We often have the opportunity to work in small, intimate groups on our workshops. I find this to be really beneficial as it affords the group a chance to study situations and material in depth.

There is an equally beneficial but different dynamic which develops in larger workshops – neither is better than the other, they’re just different.

This past week, I had the pleasure to work with a small group of delegates for three days during our Developing your Management Skills Workshops – I, II and III.

The delegates came from disparate industries, but gelled from the get go. They were really eager to absorb the material and provided complex scenarios from their respective workplaces. We were able to analyse the scenarios in detail, effectively identifying a number of different solutions to each. The exercises were run through the new tools introduced each day, thus allowing for structured critical thinking and problem solving approaches. The delegates took the bit between their teeth, rigorously applying the theory to scenarios in order to test its practical efficacy.

From a facilitating point of view, this was both hugely motivational and extremely inspirational. It also highlighted the fact that one never stops learning – particularly as a trainer. That is why this is such a cool profession in which to work. People have unique approaches to situations and each brings their own collection of experience and wisdom to bear when in solution finding mode.

A workshop can only gain momentum and become dynamic, living entities if the trainer is open to encountering and applying new approaches, often proffered by the delegates themselves. I love this part of the job the most! Each and every delegate brings their own story to the table and it’s a privilege to experience their individuality.

Without being guilty of uttering a platitude, I really do take something new away from every workshop I facilitate. How many of us can say that about their work??
