If I were to ask you who your boss was, what would you say?
You’d probably point to some guy in a suit and say, “That’s him,” or “Boss? Pah! I work for myself!” or “Why? What have I done?!”.
While you aren’t exactly wrong (they’re all still managers), the real answer is The Customer.
The Customer is the one who ultimately pays your salary and who has the ability to fire you, simply by taking their money somewhere else.
If you consider that you’re actually working for the customer you’ll then start asking the questions that matter, like “What does the customer actually WANT from us as a retailer?” or “What will make the customer COME BACK to our shop once he’s left?”
Change your focus to the customer’s wants and needs and they’ll soon notice, and return the favour by filling your tills!
