To do or not to do? - [website] Published: 22nd of Aug 2011 by: (c) Debbie Engelbrecht
Today I have a dilemma.
I have a to-do list as long as my arm, I have extreme limitations to the time to get some immensely important tasks complete and I have zero motivation for it. What can I do?
Now it is my experience that I can do very little for the day, simply wading through the list in the “order of random” and then catch up tomorrow, or I can revert to my very structured time matrix which involve me dividing my tasks into order of urgency and importance as per the well known time matrix, and simply just get over my issues by putting my head down and thrashing through the first task.
The thing is I‘ve been there and done that, which is why I know I have a to-do list as long as my arm (minus one) and I know that what I need, is the WILL to approach these tasks because essentially that is what is lacking.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my job, I meet wonderful people, I have interesting, fast paced learning material, I have sufficient challenges, sufficient infrastructure and sufficient support so I don’t think this is a job related feeling.. I think it is more.
“How to get what you want and want what you have” by John Gray – highlighted a simple concept for me years ago and according to that theory I am unbalanced right now, so whilst I am thinking through my areas needing balancing, let me share with you.
The premise is as follows: Each human being has 10 love/acceptance/recognition receptors. These receptors need to be operational all the time. For us to feel whole and balanced, we need to ensure that each and every receptor is constantly being stimulated to the extent that puts us in the space of contentment. Stimulating one receptor instead of another does not make up for the lack of stimulation of the original receptor…
The receptors are:
Love from your Higher Being
Love from your elders/parents
Love from your family and friends
Love from your peers and colleagues
Love from yourself
Love from your significant other
Love to your kids/animals
Love to your community
Love to your world
Love to your Higher Being
So essentially if you are spending more and more money on yourself getting fancy gadgets, gorgeous clothes and going to the right clubs, but still have that feeling of “is this all?” it means that any of your other 9 receptors are below the minimum level.
Now the better you know yourself the easier it becomes for you to recognise which one. The less time you spend exploring this, the longer it will take for you to recognise where you need to put your energy to find your balance.
So just making that list has now done it for me, I will make a call or two, chat to an individual or three and soon, soon, I will be able to attack that to-do list with vigour and energy, motivation and determination, after all..that is when I work SMART.
