Except that it’s probably not.
Why is it that whenever there’s a warning about pretty much anything (be it flooding, heatwaves etc.) people start spouting this ‘end of the world’ stuff?
Today at about 16:18 (SA time) a solar flare (which is basically just charged particles from the sun) will hit the Earth. You can read about it at News24 here. It will not harm anyone, but may interfere with communication equipment for a little while. What I want to draw your attention to, though, is the comments section in that article.
This is not the first time Earth has been struck by a solar flare, nor will it be the last, but news of such an event spreads through the grapevine like wildfire, finds it’s way to a few conspiracy theorists, and suddenly “the Mayans were right!”
I can’t wait until 22 December when the Mayans can stop taking credit for every little thing that happens in nature. It’s getting a little old. Don’t you think?
