The Easter What? - [website]

Easter’s just around the corner, and with it comes the inevitably long lines at the checkouts as people scramble to get all their eggs into their baskets.
Shop owners, especially confectioners, will be rubbing their hands together at the thought of all the last minute shopping they’re likely to see, but this is the thing I’ve never quite understood about Easter.

I was taught in school that Jesus died on the cross and three days later rose from beyond the grave in order to live eternally in Heaven.

That’s what we’re celebrating – the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

So who came up with this whole chocolate eating idea? It must have some significance, but I can’t for the life of me figure it out. And then there’re the Easter chickens where we get our Easter eggs from, the Easter Bunny (who also lays eggs) and even Easter reindeers nowadays (who no doubt also have the Easter ability of laying eggs).

But retailers seems to know that people’s kids will be entranced by the magical feel surrounding Easter, the cute bunnies and all the chocolate they’ll get to devour, and they play on this to boost their second-quarter sales.

Not that we really care though. We all know the Easter Bunny doesn’t really have anything to do with this religious holiday (and that bunnies don’t lay eggs) but we go along with it anyway because we all like chocolate, and even if we don’t our children do.

And that is what makes the whole thing worthwhile.
