The Advantages of Confidence - [website] Published: 5th of Sep 2011 by: Miss Knowitall
Being the quite, shy one at work can have its advantages – like being able to slip in the door ten minutes late and not be noticed – but like most things in life there’s also a down side.
While you may enjoy the fact that you quite often go unnoticed – meaning all the tedious jobs get delegated elsewhere – it also means that you’re unlikely to ever get noticed when it counts, like when promotions come up or important projects become available, and you become stuck in the same position indefinitely.
This is why confident people seem to go so much further; they are in control of their lives, set clear boundaries and communicate well, which leads to better relationships with people and a more determined attitude.
Sometimes for people who lack confidence the opposite is true, and instead of being overlooked when dirty work needs doing they’re always chosen, and meekly acquiesce as they just can’t say no.
Can you think of a time when, if you’d been a bit more confident, you wouldn’t have been stuck doing someone else’s work, or working overtime when you should have been at home?
Becoming more confident and more sure of yourself and your abilities means you’ll able to step up to the plate when it’s in your best interest, and likewise stand up for yourself when it becomes necessary.
Do you think you need to be more confident or assertive in your work life?
