Rock on Summer! - [website] Published: 5th of Oct 2011 by: Miss Knowitall
Well spring seems to be in full bloom and summer is definitely on its way, and one of the first things I always notice is how it affects people’s moods; makes them happier, more energetic, more full of life.
Not like winter, where, although it’s nice to cuddle up with a few hundred blankets and a glass of red wine, it simply gets too much after a while, being cooped up in the house like a caterpillar in a cocoon unable to bear the frigid temperatures outside, making us snappy and short-tempered and often quite depressed.
But even just a glimpse of summer through the early days of spring is enough to spark an anticipation that seems to make people feel giddy (I’m one of them, can you tell?), and the effects are really quite gratifying.
It’s like we shed our heavy winter coats that were weighing us down and get lost in thoughts of trips to the beach, getting a tan, eating ice cream on hot days, family braais on the weekend and so much more, that it’s like we finally tear open our cocoons and fly away, showing off our new lease on life to all and sundry.
Suddenly the world in yours again, no longer do you have to stay locked up indoors; the kids are free to play outside (giving mommy a well-earned break) and waking up isn’t quite as torturous as it was a few weeks ago.
And it reflects in people’s attitudes, this new breath of life. They’re smiling more, wearing brighter clothes and positively glowing (I think rugby fever might also have something to do with this), and it starts to make a lot more sense why people used to worship the sun, and why many still do.
I just hope it holds out and that by the middle of summer (which is sure to be an epically warm one) we aren’t drained of energy and fighting for the last scraps of shade. But that’s still a while off yet and I’m going to enjoy this while it lasts, and hope that you all do, too.
