Parole Models - [website] Published: 19th of Jul 2011 by: Ms Knowitall
When celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears get a bit crazy the world turns its attention to them...
...(and puts on its judging face), but are these girls looking for help or attention or is it something else all together?
Many of us think they’re just spoilt little brats intoxicated on money, meth and makeup, and as role models to so many younger girls they should know better than to behave like that.
Others might think that this is their way of crying out for help, and that instead of writing juicy columns about them we should try and address their problems.
Perhaps the things they’re doing aren’t actually as bad as the media makes out – goodness knows some of us have done far worse – and we should simply leave them to it.
Or perhaps it has something to do with the lives these women have led up to this point, which if you didn’t know (in both the case of Li-Lo and Ms Spears) was spent as Disney Stars – who are portrayed on TV as the perfect American kids.
Couldn’t it be that because these kids have had to live a life so strictly within the boundaries of their characters that when they get away from that – and no longer have to be little-miss-goodie-two-shoes – and with a hang of a lot of money to boot, they start trying to catch up on a rebellious kidulthood and go too far too quickly?
In fact, wasn’t Miley Cyrus (also a Disney Star) caught smoking a drug called Salvia with her friends not too long ago? Acting out? I think so.
And you might argue that there have been many Disney Stars who turned out just fine, which there have been, but everybody is different and some people will do just fine no matter what their situation.
Still, whatever the situation is it’s always the wrong choice to publicise these things in the scandalous way we do and offer no help in return.
Instead of turning on these people (who used to be heroes to our kids) because they are no longer good role models we should rather be showing our children that help is available when it’s needed.
After all, what kind of role models are WE if we do any less than that?
