New Managers Tips - [website]

Making the transition from supervisor to manager can be a stressful job – there’s new responsibility, more pressure, and chances are that you probably don’t feel ready for all of that.
Stop stressing, no one ever really feels ready for something like this – it’s a learning process – and while we can’t hold your hand all the way we can definitely give you some tips that might make the change easier to handle.

You may feel as though you need to keep on top of everything now that you’re in charge, and you do, but be careful not to become a hindrance to your staff – people don’t like working with someone constantly looking over their shoulder. In short, try not to micromanage.

Praise your staff. When everything is running smoothly it’s easy to forget about your workforce. It’s when they do something wrong that you pay attention. Try to publicly praise good work; it’ll motivate your staff.

Understand that no member of staff is irreplaceable, and at the same time become comfortable with the hiring process. This way you won’t be held hostage by any staff member threatening to leave, and you will also be able to help employees advance their careers by recommending them for higher positions.

Just remember that managers make mistakes – that’s how we learn – but we need to use every opportunity to learn to our best advantage, and that means not repeating mistakes.
