How To Reduce Retail Robberies - [website] Published: 1st of Feb 2012 by: Smart Alec
The Spar around the corner from my house was broken into a few nights ago, again (after having had a security gate installed), and it’s got me thinking about retail security – especially at smaller outlets.
Smaller retailers are often one of the main targets of criminals looking for an easy hit. There’s no night security, there’s usually no one around (especially in business parks etc.), and many of these stores are not fitted with alarms – they’re pretty much a burglar’s haven.
There are things retailers can do, however, to reduce the risk of theft at their branches without resorting to full-time security personnel stationed at the front door.
The following tips may help you achieve this.
1. Install security lighting throughout and around the premises.
2. Check that the building is structurally secured, e.g. is access from the roof restricted? Could a vehicle ram through the front of the shop? Does the shop have a skylight?
3. Is a safe installed on the premises? It should always be locked, correctly positioned and contain a drop chute. Cash should be banked regularly.
4. Are the doors and windows secure? Are they always locked? Are they checked before the shop is closed?
5. Are all keys secured and checked? Who has access to keys?
6. Has all the equipment etc. been photographed and recorded in case of theft? Have serial numbers been recorded?
Following these steps and ensuring that your shops is tightly locked up at night could save you thousands of rands in the long term. Don’t delay any further – check it out now.
