How Important is a Pretty Office? - [website] Published: 11th of Aug 2011 by: Debbie Engelbrecht
If you are anything like me, you are influenced by your surroundings...
If I am in an open, relaxed and organised space, I find myself operating easily at high speed and maximum efficiency.
But put me in a disorganised environment and the peripheral mess seems to encroach on my mind, my thoughts become cluttered and essentially unproductive.
At a previous company, we were incredibly pressed for space and the clutter combined with all of us falling over each other was most disturbing. To exacerbate that problem, we were all on the phone for a good portion of the day and the noise level was high. There was lots of energy in the room, but in retrospect, a lot of it was wasted.
I also once worked in an office that had cement grey walls. It was totally depressing. Each day my energy levels would drop as I sat down to commence the day and in that particular instance I finally ended up painting the office myself. Two days later the manager asked me to paint his as well!
In addition I personally have a preference for natural sunlight and an open window rather than air conditioning and fluorescent lights, yet many people work like that every day.
I just wonder how much we are all influenced by something as simple as our everyday surroundings? What do you think?
