Go On Put Your Feet Up - [website]

At this point in time, nearly halfway through the year, we thought it prudent to ask…
Have you acquired any new skills as you promised yourself?
Is your department still disorganised?
Are you still running around like a headless chicken?

One of the strongest messages we like to give management delegates in training is that good managers often sit with their feet on the desk (metaphorically speaking that is).

Fact is – you need time to think. If you’re constantly working in the job, fixing and problem solving, fighting fires and working overtime, you should definitely rather be taking some time out.

Sit down, figure out what goals need to be set, set them and set out to achieve them. Initially you may work harder but if you have set the correct goals, it’ll start getting easier.

So what goals then? A good place to start would be to look at all those problems that keep recurring. Problems such as lost documents, viruses that waste time, customer complaints that aren’t addressed, spreadsheet compilation that takes hours and hours, staff who are always absent, late report writing and a lack of accountability, to name but a few.

Once the problem has been addressed at its root cause, it will go away. This is called working AT the job – and this is indeed good management.
