Getting into the Mood for Work (Blah!) - [website] Published: 9th of Jan 2012 by: Miss Knowitall
Most of us (the lucky ones, anyway) have just had a few blissful weeks of holiday and, not quite ready for the partying to end, are finding it a little hard to get back into the swing of things at work.
If you’re anything like me you probably tossed your alarm clock at the wall this morning and snuggled down for a few more Zs before frantically waking up, checking the time and dragging yourself out of bed with all the enthusiasm of a boy on his way to the headmaster’s office.
But going back to work while your head’s still on holiday just isn’t going to work, so here are a few tips that should help get you back into the habit, even if it does seem a tad premature!
1. Start fresh. Tidy up your office or desk, file away last year’s documents and clean up the files and folders on your desktop, then see how you feel, chances are you’ll already be more mentally prepared for the year to come.
2. Let the world know your intentions. Tell your followers on Twitter (Twitterers?), your peeps on Facebook and your loyal blog readers that for the next few hours (or days or weeks…) you’ll be unreachable due to the mountain of work you intend to tackle.
3. You can take it a step further by turning off your email notifier, closing Skype and setting you IM presence to “Do Not Disturb”. (Just remember to turn them back on; we don’t want you getting in trouble when the MD finds you completely off the grid!)
4. Decide on a set amount of time (let’s say 45 minutes) you’re going to work before taking a break. Then stick to it! With small (or large) increments of time dedicated solely to getting the work done you’ll find your mountain of work gradually reduced to a molehill.
5. If all else fails lock your office door, assume the foetal position and rock back and forth until home time – it’s always worked for me!
