Cracking Under Pressure - [website] Published: 10th of Oct 2011 by: Smart Alec
Life is hectic – we know that. We've got bills to pay, families we're responsible for and jobs that are constantly demanding, and we know that stress is an undeniable part of this life.
After all, nothing is going to stop the bills from piling up, our families aren’t going to suddenly stop needing us and there’s no hope of our jobs miraculously becoming a cakewalk, is there?
But none of this means you have no control over the levels of stress in your life; in fact, you probably have a whole lot more control than you even thought possible.
While you may not be able to add a few extra hours onto the day (God, wouldn’t that be great?) you DO have the ability to take charge of your own time, your schedule, your thoughts and your environment, which can help you balance your day and reduce the amounts of stress you feel.
Like with any problem, however, the first step on the road to resolution is pinpointing its cause, which means taking note of when you feel stressed, what is making you feel stressed and how you reacted to the situation.
Once you can spot the factors contributing to your stress levels the problems become much easier to deal with; you can rearrange your schedule to ensure you meet your deadlines, you can periodically remove specific stressors (constant emails, staff issues, telephones) allowing you the time you need to complete tasks, and you can learn how to change your reaction to particular stressors to achieve better results.
The statements “Things are always hectic around here” and “Stress is just a part of this job” are false. Stress is manageable, and, unfortunately, if unchecked can lead to serious health issues (not to mention the effects of its harmful coping methods like drinking and smoking).
The power to make a difference lies solely with you.
